	Jupe {click photo}	Breed: Poodle Jupe has had a rough life and would rather not be at the shelter, for his third try at a forever home. He has some fear issues and seems to get along better with men, but he is looking for a quiet and stress-free home to live out his life. Even though he is ten years old, he is in great shape and loves to go out for long walks. He doesn't like other dogs, but he doesn't show aggression towards them either. He just likes his own space. We don't recommend him in a home with children. Weight: 12 lbs Age: 10 years old Sex: Male
	Brutus {click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Brutus was found hungry and scared. Because he's so sweet and has these wonderful soulful eyes, he was soon adopted. But once settled into his new home, he began showing a dislike for other animals. That includes dogs and horses too, which caused him to be returned. But he is just in love with people. He quickly warms up to them and loves giving and getting hugs. He would make a wonderful family dog, he's great with kids, but needs to be kept away from other animals. 	Leroy {click photo}	Breed: Labrador mix Leroy is a great dog! He was originally found as a stray several years ago and was adopted from us and lived with them for 2 years. Sadly, some of his needs were sorely neglected, and he ended up being returned to us 30lbs overweight! He is nervous is the shelter, because he misses his home, but we are hoping someone will fall in love with him quickly. Someone that will take him out for long walks and runs. Leroy is good with other dogs and children, but he needs to be put on a healthy diet. He is a great walker too, doesn't pull, despite his size. Weight: 90 lbs Age: 7 years old Sex: Male
	Pink Floyd {click photo}	Breed: Poodle Pink Floyd was found as a stray on the streets of Brooklyn and was brought in by a good samaritan. He is a beautiful poodle, he has a spring to his step and loves to be social with people and other dogs. We were shocked when we realized he was an older dog. But he has plenty more years in him. He has a great energy and is friendly towards everyone. Weight: 20 lbs Age: 8-10 years old Sex: Male
	Hennesey {click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Hennesey is a lovely and beautiful dog. She gets along with some other dogs, as she is an alpha female. Her friends here are generally the calm, older dogs here. She loves people though, she will cuddle with you all day, but she would also like an active home, where she can go running in the park. Hennesey is definitely not good with cats!! Weight: 55 lbs Age: 6 years old Sex: Female
	Delilah{click photo}	Breed: American Bulldog Delilah is a wonderful girl. She was rescued from a vacant lot and went to the city pound and then to a boarding facility upstate where she was well-trained and socialed with people and dogs. She is a sweetheart, and she is a perfect size for an apartment. Come meet her and take this beauty home! Weight: 55 lbs Age: 4 years old Sex: Female
	Petey {click photo}	Breed: Patterdale (Fell) Terrier Petey has a heartbreaking look to him, which is probably because he was sadly surrendered by his dad because of "personal problems". Now, left without a home, he spends much of his day hiding under the covers. He is pretty good with some other dogs, currently living with 2 other male dogs, but unfortunately, we can't recommend him to a family with children. Despite that, he would make a great companion to some caring adults. Weight: 25 lbs Age: 2-4 years old Sex: Male
	Toby{click photo}	Breed: Chihuahua Toby was originally abandoned at the city shelter over 3 years ago and after being adopted and cared for, was abandoned with us. He came to us sick and confused, which told us he didn't receive very good care. He is scared and protective of strangers and should not be in a home with kids. But once he gets to know you, Toby would make a wonderful lap dog. As a senior dog, Toby doesn't require much maintenance and really just wants a nice warm home with some peace and quiet after a sad and difficult life. Weight: 10 lbs Age: 10 yrs old Sex: Male
	Brenda{click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Brenda was found on the streets in bad shape, weak and sick with pneumonia. She is doing much better now and is now a bundle of energy. She doesn't get along with all dogs, but she is still learning, and has just started work with a trainer. She'll need a home that can continue her training regimen. This good-natured dog is a sweetheart and you'll love her big ears and adorable wiggle when she greets you! Please come to the shelter to meet her! Weight: 47 lbs Age: 2 years old Sex: Female
	Aponte{click photo}	Breed: Akita / Pit Bull Terrier Aponte is a sweet, gentle and alert doggy who gets along well with other dogs. But he really loves people and especially enjoys belly rubs. He is a strong boy, but a very good walker and is waiting for his forever home. Weight: 65 lbs Age: 7 years old Sex: Male
	Greg{click photo}	Breed: Scottish Terrier mix Greg is a fiesty, high-energy dog who would do best in a home without small children, however, he gets along very well with other dogs in the home, and he has had several roommates here at the shelter. Greg does have dominance issues with people and it takes a while to earn his trust, but in the right home, he would be loving and thrive.. Weight: 48 lbs Age: 8 years old Sex: Male
	Dutch{click photo}	Breed: Labrador Mix Dutch aka Grandpa, is SO SWEET and has lots of love and energy left and really would be soooooo grateful to enjoy the rest of his years! Please consider adopting an older gent. He won't let you down! Weight: 77 lbs Age: 14 years old Sex: Male
	Sammy{click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Sammy is 100% pure love! He is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog, with a great personality and a touch of goof-ball thrown in. He was found as a stray by the city pound, though he probably wasn't living on the streets long before he was found. Come meet this adorable little boy! Weight: 55 lbs Age: 1-1/2 year old Sex: Male
	Mango{click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Mango was adopted from us as a puppy and then recently abandoned again at the city shelter to be euthanized. Thankfully, we got her back and don't understand why anyone would be so awful to a sweet puppy like this. Mango is a sweetheart, housetrained, and has learned basic obedience and is learning to socialize with other dogs. Mango is eager to please, very loving and needs someone who understands how to raise an energetic little lady like Mango. Weight: 55 lbs Age: 1-1/2 year old Sex: Female
	Buster{click photo}	Breed: Boxer Buster was surrendered by his owner after being passed around several different households. Unable to find him a good home, he has ended up at BARC. He has a scar on his snout, probably from a very tight muzzle, but Buster is very well behaved and shows only friendliness towards people. Other than this scar, he is in great shape. He is a bit unsure of some other dogs, but we think he'd get along with dogs to whom he is properly introduced. We love Buster and want him to find the right forever home. 	Chance{click photo}	Breed: Labrador / American Staffordshire Terrier Chance is a strong dog that loves people and shows it. He is energetic, but also likes to sit down on a park bench with you and lay his head in your lap. He is a well-trained dog and needs someone to maintain that training. He also needs lots of exercise and loves to have fun! Weight: 55 lbs Age: 5 years old Sex: Male
	Molly{click photo}	Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier Molly is a sweet little lady, but very shy. It takes a bit of time for her to trust you but once she does, she is an absolute sweetheart. She isn't good with some dogs, especially smaller fluffy ones, but she gets along great with dominant males. Weight: 40 lbs Age: 8 years old Sex: Female
	Kenneth{click photo}	Breed: Retriever / Shepherd mix Kenneth is a beautiful young dog. He looks like he is all Golden Retriever, but has a touch of black on his tail which looks a bit like a German Shepherd's. He is extremely sweet with people, but very energetic. He also isn't a fan of some other dogs. However, we have a training program that is helping to socialize him with other dogs. Kenneth will need an adopter that can continue his training, but we are sure Kenneth will make someone a wonderful companion. Weight: 53 lbs Age: 3 years old Sex: Male
	Maggie{click photo}	Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier Maggie is a sweet girl with a heart of gold. She has been with us for quite a long while and we have struggled finding her a good home, through no fault of her own. She is good with some other dogs. She has had several dog roommates here, but she doesn't enjoy jumpy nervous dogs. We are working on getting her into shape again because it sure is hard getting our arms around her middle when we snuggle with her. Weight: 80 lbs Age: 5 years old Sex: Female

adopting
a pet

Interested adopters should visit the shelter. There are more dogs available than our Web listings indicate. We advise people to come and walk some of our dogs and play with our cats to get a better idea of which animal would be best for them. We are open for adoption, Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm - 5pm. Please come at least 2 hours BEFORE closing.

We require an adoption fee of $150. This covers, in part, the extensive medical care all of our pets receive before adoption, including:

examination and treatment by a veterinarian
spaying or neutering
current vaccinations against distemper, kennel cough (dogs) and rabies (if the pet is old enough)
testing for feline leukemia and feline AIDS or heartworm (dogs)
deworming, and
microchipping (dogs)

All adopters are required to complete and sign BARC's adoption agreement.

happy tails

We adopted BELLA, a boxer/bulldog mix, from BARC in September 2004. Bella is our love and our buddy. We were lucky enough to be able to adopt her after she had spent about a week with you. She has a little pig tail but she does her best to wag it all the time! She is the most popular dog in Prospect Heights, it seems everyone we pass knows her name. She spends her evenings running with other dogs in Prospect Park...she especially likes her fellow bull dogs! The furniture is all hers and she loves to cuddle in bed. Although she snores louder than any human we know, we love her that much more for it. She will spending July with Amy's parents on Long Island while we visit Thailand for our honeymoon and we'll miss her terribly. But she loves running up and down the beach chasing waves and will have a honeymoon of her own. We are so grateful to BARC and the fantastic people who give their time to the animals there. We tell everyone we meet that Bella is a BARC dog! In lieu of favors at our July 3rd wedding, we will be making a donation to BARC in our guests' honor. We couldn't think of a more deserving cause. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
